Yes, absolutely! Birth support/partners are encouraged to attend the workshop as well. The cost is per couple – you do not need to book twice.

Maternal Mental Health Day is an important annual event aimed at raising awareness of the mental health challenges that many women face during pregnancy and after childbirth.

It’s estimated that one and five women experience some form of perinatal mental illness, yet many suffer in silence due to the stigma and lack of understanding about these conditions.

By bringing attention to the issue, we can help and encourage women to seek the support and treatment they need.

The 3rd of May is an opportunity to promote education, advocacy, and support for mothers and families affected by perinatal mental illness.

We are here for you every step of the way.

Some popular oils use during birth include lavender, peppermint, and frankincense.

💜 Lavender has calming properties and can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation

💚 Peppermint can be used to help alleviate nausea and vomiting

🧡 Frankincense is believed to have a grounding effect and can promote feelings of calm and tranquility.

It’s important to note that essential oils should always be used under the guidance of trained aromatherapists or healthcare professionals as some are believed to be harmful. Always check with your Midwife before using them.

The power of birth affirmations ✨

Affirmations are essentially positive statements that we repeat to ourselves in order to reinforce certain beliefs, attitudes or behaviours. These statements can be simple or complex, but they are usually framed in a positive and empowering way.

The idea behind affirmations is that by repeating these positive messages to ourselves, we can gradually shift our thoughts and beliefs in a more positive direction. For example, if we are struggling with anxiety or self-doubt, we might repeat affirmations, such as
“I am strong and capable” or “I trust in my ability to handle any situation”. By focusing on these positive messages, we can start to shift our mindset and develop more confidence and resilience over time.

Affirmations can be used in a variety of challenging situations. With something like the labour and birth process, affirmations can help expecting parents to stay focused, calm, and feel empowered. They may seem simple but they’re a powerful tool that can help shift thoughts and beliefs in a more positive direction and cultivate a greater sense of inner strength and resilience.

We think it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with your chosen hospital, if possible. Do a little practice run prior to your baby’s arrival to help you feel that little bit more relaxed and confident ready for when labour really happens. After all, we need all that oxytocin to flow ✨

Have your hospital bag ready to go, know where you’re going to park the car and stay cool, calm and collected! There is often no need to rush. Just take your time and we’ll be there to welcome you onto the unit with open arms 🤍

This is just a quick video on where to go if you’re booked at The Mater Hospital, making it super easy to follow.

Through our collaboration, we strive to offer the most current, transparent and pertinent information on childbirth parenting and related topics.

Classes are taught by Registered Midwives Lucy Carroll and Kristin Gosling who are esteemed and devoted Mater Midwives.

With their extensive experience in their respective fields, Lucy on the Birth Unit and Kristin on the Postnatal ward, they specialise in providing practical information to assist expectant parents in navigating the unpredictability of childbirth and parenting.

With a diverse array of classes, Lucy and Kristin take into account the distinct needs of their couples and are committed to delivering honest and relevant education.

Their classes, including The Positive Birth Workshop, Caesarean workshop, Infant feeding and parenting classes and a range of other offerings, they cover all aspects of antenatal education.

Lucy and Kristin, endeavour to empower and foster confidence in expectant parents through their small, interactive and face-to-face classes which are capped at 10 couples.

It’s important during your preparation for birth, that you are aware of the different fetal heart rate monitoring options available to you and you understand the reasons why certain types of monitoring may be necessary.

We previously discussed the use of intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart for low risk pregnancies, labours and births.

A Cardiotocograph or CTG, is typically used when there are concerns about the babies well-being, such as meconium stained liquor, fetal growth restriction or when an epidural has been used for pain relief.

Midwives will attach two discs, which have sensors, to your tummy. The discs are secured with stretchy straps. One continuously records your baby’s heartbeat and the other, monitors contractions in real time, which can help Obstetricians and Midwives identify any potential issues and take appropriate action.

OB’s and Midwives are all trained to interpret the CTG information correctly.

CTG monitoring can sometimes restrict movement during labour due to the wires used but most hospitals now offer a wireless and waterproof version, which is amazing! This can provide more freedom and allow use of amenities, like the shower or bath.

Music is used by many expectant parents as they welcome their baby into the world. It can help to create a calm and relaxed environment and can even help to manage pain and discomfort! 😯

Some studies have suggested that listening to music during labour, can reduce anxiety and stress, decrease the need for pain medication and improve overall satisfaction of the birth experience.

Of course, the specific effects of music can vary from person to person and it’s important to find music that resonates with your individual preferences and needs. Some may like to listen to calming instrumental music, while others may find more energetic or rhythmic music to be helpful.

Whatever your preference, whether you’re at home, in a Birth Unit or in theatre, bring your speakers and playlist. It can be a really great distraction, a great way to help promote positivity and contribute to an empowering birth experience!
